Has Jaws come to Britain?
30/07/2007 20:35 - (SA)
London - Cold water, grey skies and now this: the latest affliction for Britain's beachgoers is worry that there's a great white shark somewhere out there waiting to attack.
Over the past week, several claims have been made of sighting the feared fish off the coast of Cornwall and at least two blurry videos of suspicious-looking fins and snouts have surfaced.
The reports were a constant on British television news broadcasts on Monday, but for all the jawing there was no confirmation that Jaws had come to Britain.
Richard Peirce, chairperson of the Shark Trust, said the creature shown in the latest video could be a common mako shark, a breed less threatening to humans.
Dave Foster, of the British Surfing Association, based in Cornwall, said he did not think the reports would deter real aficionados.
"Even in parts of the world where the sharks are known to be and surfers have been attacked, it hasn't stopped people," he said.
