Boise - Republican US Senator
Larry Craig of Idaho said on Tuesday he was not gay and had
made a mistake in pleading guilty to disorderly conduct
following a June arrest at a Minnesota airport men's toilet.
First elected to the US Senate in 1990, Craig was
arrested by a plainclothes police officer investigating
complaints of lewd conduct in the men's public restroom at the
Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport.
"I am not gay, I never have been gay," he told reporters in
Boise, Idaho, and apologised to the people of Idaho for what he
said was a "cloud" placed over Idaho because of the incident.
"I did nothing wrong," he said.
The conservative Republican, who has spoken out against gay
rights and same-sex marriage in the past, said he would be
announcing next month, as earlier planned, whether he would
seek re-election next year.
Senate Republican leaders on Tuesday requested a Senate
ethics panel investigation of Craig.
Those leaders were "examining other aspects of the case to determine if additional action is required", they said.
