Prisoners free for Ramadan
10/09/2007 17:28 - (SA)
Jerusalem - Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert promised Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas during talks on Monday to release prisoners as a gesture of goodwill for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
"Abu Mazen (Abbas) requested the release of prisoners and the prime minister promised he will recommend to his ministers to release prisoners back to the West Bank and Gaza as a gesture of goodwill for Ramadan," a senior Israeli government official told reporters after the meeting.
Israeli officials had earlier said that Olmert would refuse such a gesture.
Abbas and Olmert met for more than two hours on Monday, in their latest meeting ahead of a US-sponsored Middle East peace conference expected in November.
