Cops on alert after threats
11/09/2007 09:50 - (SA)
Berlin - German police launched a major operation at the US military airport at Spangdahlem after US forces received threats by telephone, police in the west German city of Trier said on Tuesday.
The base received an anonymous call on Monday around 17:30 GMT, a police spokesperson told AFP, who did not rule out that it could have been a bad joke.
"The man, who spoke in German with an accent that could have been Turkish or Russian, threatened to attack the Spangdahlem base with at least four accomplices. During the call, there was mention of 'bombs'", the police said in a statement.
"The US armed forces immediately informed the police, who immediately put protective measures in place at the base, with the co-operation of the US security forces."
The police spokesperson said investigators were concentrating on trying to identify the anonymous caller.
The operation came less than a week after the arrest of three suspects on suspicion of planning attacks on airports and other places frequented by Americans.
Tuesday is the sixth anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks in the United States.
