US war 'will end in defeat'

Seoul - North Korea's ruling communist party newspaper heaped scorn on Thursday on the US "war on terror", saying it would end only in shameful defeat.
"The US is racing headlong in the aggressive 'anti-terrorism war' but only shameful defeat and death await it," said the Rodong Sinmun in an article reflecting on the sixth anniversary this month of the 9/11 attacks in New York and Washington.
The paper noted that some 3&nsp;790 US soldiers had been killed and almost 28 000 wounded in Iraq, and said "deserters and lunatics" are on the increase in its military units.
Washington had also suffered "incredible economic and financial losses", the paper said, along with major political setbacks.
"With the aggressive and dangerous nature of the war revealed more glaringly as the days go by, the US finds itself an object of bitter denunciation and rejection in the world," it said.
"The bankruptcy of the 'anti-terrorism war' immediately means the end of the policy of strength of the US. The 21st century will be the century of the total fiasco of this policy."
North Korea has been bitterly hostile to the US since it came into being in 1948. But negotiators from the two sides have held a series of bilateral meetings this year as part of six-nation negotiations on scrapping the North's nuclear programme.
A February accord envisages an end to US sanctions and normalised relations if the North verifiably scraps all its nuclear programmes and weapons.
