German suspect flees to UK
30/09/2007 19:28  - (SA)

  • Bombs rip through crowded areas
  • UK facing 'serious threat'
  • Plans for 2nd wave of UK bombs
  • London - A man suspected of having played a key role in an alleged plot to carry out large-scale attacks in Germany has fled to Britain, a British newspaper said on Sunday.

British counter-terrorism police are hunting for the suspect who fled from Germany after the discovery of a plot aimed at setting off bombs at Frankfurt airport and a US army base, The Sunday Times said.

The fugitive's presence in Britain raises fears that the group may have a network in the UK, according to the report, which quoted unnamed German security officials.

Planning to attack the US base at Ramstein

Police arrested two German converts to Islam and a Turk at a rented home in the Sauerland region on September 4 where they had stockpiled chemicals, which prosecutors said they planned to use in "massive" bomb attacks.

The men allegedly belonged to the Islamic Jihad Union, a little-known group from Uzbekistan with links to Al-Qaeda which said the suspects were planning to attack the US military airbase at Ramstein in western Germany.

The German authorities have been investigating 10 people in connection with the case, including two who are overseas.

The German federal police and British counter-terrorism police declined to comment on the report, while German prosecutors neither confirmed nor denied it, saying the people under investigation have the right to travel.
