San Juan - Eight detainees were transferred from the US military prison at Guantanamo Bay to the custody of several Middle Eastern governments, a Pentagon spokesperson said on Sunday.
Six detainees were transferred to Afghanistan, and one each to Libya and Yemen, said Jeffrey Gordon, a Defence Department spokesperson. Their identities were not released.
Gordon said: "All detainees at Guantanamo are considered a threat to the United States.
"As a condition of repatriation, nations accepting detainees must take steps to prevent the return to terrorism, as well as providing credible assurances of humane treatment."
Of the 759 prisoners that have been held at Guantanamo, at least 218 have been Afghan nationals. Roughly 100 have been transferred.
About 330 detainees remain in Guantanamo on suspicion of links to terrorism, al-Qaeda or the Taliban.
