NZ 'becoming more violent'
01/10/2007 11:05 - (SA)
Wellington - New Zealand is becoming a more violent society, according to official crime figures released on Monday.
Although there was a one-percent fall in the overall crime rate in the past fiscal year, the number of violent offences and sexual assaults both rose more than four percent in the year that ended in June, police statistics showed.
Police attributed the increase to more domestic attacks in the home being reported.
Assistant Commissioner Grant Nicholls said police in the country of 4.2 million people responded to more than 790 000 domestic violence calls in the year.
The overall crime rate was down because of a large fall in the number of dishonesty offences, including theft and stealing cars, which account for 55% of all reported crime.
The capital, Wellington, came out worst in the city crime stakes with reported offences rising seven percent.
