Lucknow - At least 15 Hindu women pilgrims were killed and 53 women injured in northern India on Wednesday in a stampede at a train station triggered by passengers travelling without tickets, authorities said.
The incident, in Mughalsarai town in Uttar Pradesh state, took place after some passengers travelling without tickets panicked on seeing ticket inspectors, jumped out of rail cars and ran on the crowded platform, they said.
The pilgrims were returning home after a dip in the holy Ganges river to mark an annual fasting ritual.
