Afghanistan executes 15
08/10/2007 19:14 - (SA)
Kabul - Afghanistan has executed 15
prisoners, state television said on Monday, the first time it
has carried out the death penalty in three years and the most to
be put to death since the Taliban were toppled in 2001.
It said the 15 men were executed by firing squad at a prison
in Kabul on Sunday for a variety of crimes, including the murder
of foreign reporters, killing UN staff, killing police, theft,
kidnapping and highway robbery.
The last man to be executed in Afghanistan was in 2004.
The UN representative said in a statement it would have
been better if Afghanistan had maintained its moratorium on
using the death penalty.
