  • Johannesburg / Harare - Police in Zimbabwe have arrested a citizen of the United States at the country's premier resort of Victoria Falls for allegedly trying to smuggle firearms and ammunition, state radio said on Monday.

The man, identified as Leslie Francis Howell Jr from Florida, was apprehended at the Victoria Falls airport while trying to board a plane carrying two pistols and 300 rounds of ammunition on Friday, according to the report.

He was detained over the weekend and was due to appear in court in Hwange on charges of possessing unlicensed weapons and may also be charged with smuggling arms, the radio said.

Howell was reported to have arrived in Harare on September 21 and had been roaming in the country armed until Friday, the radio said.

The report claimed that the incident could be a ploy by the US to scare off tourists and said the arrest would send a message depicting the country as an unsafe tourist destination. - Sapa-dpa
