  • Cleveland - A 14-year-old pupil shot and wounded two adults and two pupils at a high school near downtown Cleveland, and then killed himself, authorities said on Wednesday.

Mayor Frank Jackson said: "He has committed suicide as I understand it."

The wounded were two men aged 42 and 57 and two male pupils, ages 17 and 14.

Jackson also said a third pupil, a 14-year-old girl, was injured in a fall during the incident at SuccessTech Academy, a specialised school that concentrates on maths and technology.

Latisha Hill told one television station pupils began taking cover when the emergency command was announced and she locked herself in a bathroom until police knocked on the door and let her out.

"All I know is I heard the principal yell 'code blue'," Hill said.

The incident was the latest in a string of shootings in recent years in schools that have shaken the United States.

A student at Virginia Tech college killed 32 students and staff in April, then himself, in the worst shooting rampage in modern US history.

CNN quoted media reports as saying the suspected gunman in Wednesday's incident was upset at being suspended from school.

One unidentified pupil said he heard "screaming, gunshots, everything".
