US a 'nation of discontent'

  • Half of US says no to Hillary
  • Most Americans anti-Bush
  • Washington - A year before they go to the polls to pick a new president, most US voters are unhappy with the situation in their country, according to a Gallup poll published on Thursday by USA Today.

Asked how they felt about how things were going in the United States, 72% said they were dissatisfied. Just 26% said they were satisfied, the survey showed.

In light of the poll, the national newspaper hailed a "nation of discontent".

Not since 1992, the era of George Bush senior, has the country been stewing in so much malaise, the paper said.

Iraq and the state of the economy are the two major issues troubling US voters. Four out of 10 said the war in Iraq would be the deciding factor in determining how they will vote. Six out of 10 Americans believe invading Iraq was a mistake.

At least 32% of those surveyed back President George W Bush.

The Democrat-led Congress however is not earning a whole lot of love, either: just 29% said they approved of its performance.

The poll of 1 009 people was taken October 12-14. Its margin of error was three percent.
