  • Rome - Police have arrested three people over the murder of a British exchange student in central Italy last week, including her American flatmate and her Italian boyfriend, the ANSA news agency said on Tuesday.

They also arrested a Congolese citizen in connection with the brutal murder of 21-year-old Meredith Kercher last Friday, it reported.

The 20-year-old flatmate, 24-year-old boyfriend and the Congolese, 37, are suspected of homicide and sexual assault.

Kercher, from south London, was found dead with her throat slit in her bedroom in an apartment in Perugia.

Officials said on Monday that initial post-mortem results showed she was not raped.

Kercher was a student in her third year of a European studies degree, and was in Italy with the pan-European Erasmus exchange programme.

Police went to Kercher's apartment after finding two mobile phones that belonged to her in a nearby garden.

They forced open Kercher's locked door and found her body under a mattress. Blood was also detected on a broken window through which her attacker is thought to have escaped.

Police were looking into her last telephone conversations.
