Paris - Deadly recent school shootings around the world, excluding incidents linked to civil unrest:
January 1989 - United States: six dead
A 24-year-old man wearing military gear opens fire on a school playground in Stockton, California. He kills five children and then himself.
December 1989 - Canada: 15 dead
A man with a grudge against feminists shoots dead 14 women at Montreal University in Quebec, before killing himself.
March 1996 - Britain: 18
Sixteen children aged four to six, plus their teacher are shot dead by a gunman in Dunblane, Scotland. The assailant then kills himself.
April 1996 - China: seven
A man stabs to death seven children aged seven to 14 in two schools in the town of Meitian, Hunan province.
March 1997 - Yemen: six
A Yemeni veteran of the war in Afghanistan opens fire in two private schools in the capital Sanaa. He kills six people, including four students.
March 1998 - United States: five
Two boys aged 13 and 11 shoot dead four girls and a woman teacher at a middle school in Jonesboro, Arkansas.
April 1999 - United States: 15
Two heavily armed youths kill 12 fellow students and a teacher at the Columbine high school in Littleton, Colorado. They then commit suicide.
June 2001 - Japan: eight
A deranged man stabs to death eight small children at an elementary school in Tokyo.
April 2002 - Germany: 16
A student who is angry at having been expelled from his school enters it and guns down 16 people, including 12 teachers and two students.
November 2004 - China: eight
A 21-year-old man enters a high school in Hunan province and opens fire in a dormitory, killing eight teenagers and injuring four.
March 2005 - United States: 10
A 16-year-old boy kills two people at his home in the Red Lake Indian Reservation of Minnesota, then goes to his school where he kills five fellow students, a teacher and a security guard and then himself.
October 2006: United States: five
A man enters a school of the Amish community in Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania and shoots 11 girls, killing five.
April 2007: United States: 33
A heavily armed South Korean student kills a total of 31 people on his campus at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. He then kills himself.
November 2007 - Finland: nine
An 18-year-old pupil opens fire in a school in southern Finland killing five boys, two girls and the headmistress before turning his gun on himself. He dies later in hospital.
