11/11/2007 12:04 - (SA)
Tehran - Iran hanged a convicted drug trafficker in the southeastern city of Zahedan on Sunday, the official Irna news agency reported.
The man identified as Nader Kalbali was sent to the gallows in a prison in Zahedan for carrying 2kg of heroin.
Iran's southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchestan, of which Zahedan is the capital, borders Afghanistan and Pakistan and is regarded as a key transit point in the international opium and heroin trade.
The latest execution brings to at least 254 the number of people hanged in Iran this year, according to an AFP count compiled from press and witness reports.
Iran executed at least 177 people in 2006, according to Amnesty International. Capital offences in Iran include murder, rape, armed robbery, serious drug trafficking and adultery.
The Islamic republic has stepped up executions in recent months as officials enforce a campaign they say is aimed at promoting virtue and boosting security in society.
