Iran hangs two drug traffickers
24/11/2007 17:44 - (SA)
Tehran - Iran on Saturday hanged two men convicted of drug-trafficking in the southeastern city of Zahedan, the latest part of a new drive to boost public security, said reports.
Shamseddin Darvakh Gorgich and Mahmoud Shah Pashtoon were executed in prison for trafficking heroin in Sistan-Baluchestan province, which lied on a major narcotics route from Afghanistan and Pakistan in southeastern Iran.
The hangings brought the total number of executions in Iran this year to 269, according to reports. Many were hanged in public.
The Islamic republic had noticeably stepped up executions in recent months as officials enforced a campaign against "thugs" like drug-traffickers, extortionists and rapists.
Iran executed at least 177 people in 2006, according to Amnesty International. Capital offences in Iran included murder, rape, armed robbery, serious drug trafficking and adultery.
