Iran missile 'cause for worry'
27/11/2007 21:26 - (SA)
Paris - France voiced its concern on Tuesday at Iran's announcement that it has built a new missile whose range puts Israel and US bases in the Middle East within easy reach.
"This news is a cause of concern for us, and it illustrates the need to be extremely vigilant with regard to Iran's actions and intentions," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Pascale Andreani told reporters.
"For France, but also for the international community, the proliferation of ballistic missile technology is a source of major concern."
Andreani stressed that UN resolutions 1696, 1737 and 1747 introduced sanctions against Iran "to fight against its proliferation activities, both in the nuclear and missile fields".
Iranian Defence Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar announced on Tuesday that the new "Ashura" missile had a range of 2 000km - the farthest in Iran's arsenal - state media reported.
Iran has regularly touted the abilities of its missile arsenal at a time of mounting tension with the West over its nuclear programme.
The United States accuses Iran of trying to develop a nuclear weapon, a charge that Tehran vehemently denies.
