Suicide attacker hits army bus
05/12/2007 07:27 - (SA)
Kabul - A suicide attacker slammed a bomb-filled car into an Afghan army bus in the capital Kabul on Wednesday, killing at least 13 people, the defence ministry said, in the second such blast in two days.
The extremist Taliban group claimed responsibility for the morning rush-hour suicide attack, which struck in the south of the city as US Defence Secretary Robert Gates wrapped up a surprise visit.
The bus was reduced to mangled metal, its roof and sides blown out, an AFP reporter at the scene said.
"It was a big explosion and sent fire into the sky," witness Akbari Sarwar, told AFP.
"When I moved in I saw scores of bodies, legs, arms, heads, flesh everywhere," said Sarwar, a journalist who was on the road when the blast hit.
Six Afghan National Army soldiers and seven civilians were registered dead immediately after the attack, defence ministry spokesperson General Mohammad Zahir Azimi told reporters at the site of the blast.
At least 13 people were wounded, he said, adding he expected the final numbers to be higher when the situation became more clear.
A health ministry official said four of the dead were children.
