Cops sent to protect tourists
26/12/2007 22:58 - (SA)
New Delhi - Authorities deployed thousands of police in a popular resort area in India to protect tourists after a group protesting the building of industrial parks said it could not ensure the safety of visitors, an official said.
The group in Goa, a palm-fringed state on India's western coast popular with foreigners, said earlier this week that its protests would intensify on Friday, prompting the state government to send 6 000 police and police reserve officers to beaches and into towns.
"Full security will be provided to tourists. There is no reason to worry," Goa's chief minister, Digambar Kamat told the Zee News television channel.
