Troops kill 20 Tamil Tigers
29/12/2007 16:12 - (SA)
Colombo - Sri Lankan troops captured territory in the Tamil guerrillas' de-facto state in the north on Saturday after a fierce clash killed at least 20 guerrillas, the military said.
Soldiers pushed into rebel-held territory and seized part of Parappakandal village in northern Mannar district, a defence official said on condition of anonymity citing government policy.
About 20 rebels were killed and no soldiers were lost, he said.
Rebel spokesperson Rasiah Ilanthirayan could not be reached for comment and independent confirmation was not possible because journalists are barred from the area.
