'Pocket' paedophile nabbed
11/01/2008 18:15 - (SA)
Oslo - A suspected paedophile, who allegedly assaulted scores of young boys for the past 30 years, was arrested on Friday, police in the Norwegian west-coast city of Bergen said.
DNA analysis was used to secure his arrest, but police chief Arne Jorgen Olafsen told reporters that information from the general public, police investigations and media reports also contributed to the breakthrough.
The suspect, known as the "Pocket Man," is alleged to have committed up to 350 assaults during his forays in southern Norway, some dating back to the 1970s, according to police sources quoted by Norwegian media.
In 2003, a nationally coordinated probe to seek his arrest was launched.
The 55-year-old suspect was said to be a wealthy businessman with two adult children who lived in the Bergen area.
His alias was linked to his tactic of asking young boys to help him remove something from a trouser pocket. However, the pocket would have been cut open so the unsuspecting victim would often end up touching the man's genitals.
Some victims were forced to perform oral sex, police said.
