Town to make snow for winter

Helsinki - A small town in western Finland plans to make snow this winter and then preserve it through the year in an effort to stop warmer weather from spoiling next year's cross-country ski season.
"We are planning to make enough snow with snow machines for a 2km long track this winter, when and if it gets cold enough," Kalajoki sports director Jouko Moilanen said.
"Then we cover the pile with sawdust, and wait until the next fall, when we spread it."
Only a little of the snow will melt over the summer, as the sawdust would insulate it efficiently, he said.
Kalajoki, about 300km south of the Arctic circle, has practically no snow on the ground, as early winter has been unseasonably warm in the Nordic country. Temperatures right now hover just above the freezing point.
