Wana - Dozens of Pakistani troops were missing on Wednesday after hundreds of Islamic militants took control of a paramilitary fort in a tribal region near the Afghan border, security sources said.
Heavy fighting erupted after rebels armed with rocket launchers, grenades and assault rifles attacked the outpost at Sararogha town in the South Waziristan tribal district overnight, they said.
"It was a massive attack and we are still collecting details about casualties and losses," a military official said.
Security sources in South Waziristan said that "dozens" of soldiers were in the fort when the attack took place and their fate was unclear.
"We don't know whether they are alive, dead or kidnapped," the security source said.
The attack came after security forces shelled several suspected hideouts of militant leader Baitullah Mehsud in the district, killing three people, a security official said.
