Fidel will know his fate soon
21/01/2008 00:02  - (SA)

  • Fidel not ready for public
  • Castro 'ready to return'
  • Democracy 'coming soon' to Cuba
  • Castro 'won't cling to office'
  • Fidel Castro applauds Chavez
  • Havana - Cuba's parliament will decide on the future of the country's ailing leader Fidel Castro when it holds a meeting on February 24, interim president Raul Castro announced on Sunday.

The announcement came as more than eight million Cubans cast votes for the new National Assembly - the legislature empowered with picking the country's leader - amid widespread speculation that the assembly may pick someone other than Fidel Castro for the first time in almost five decades.

Castro, who has been sidelined from power for nearly 18 months following major intestinal surgery, is among 614 uncontested candidates for the legislature, which will name 31 lawmakers to the Council of State led by the president.
