UN sanctions won't deter Iran

Tehran - Iran's nuclear activities will not be deterred by any new UN Security Council resolutions imposing sanctions on the Islamic Republic, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Wednesday.
The five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany agreed on Tuesday to impose new sanctions on Iran over its controversial nuclear programme though the measures appeared to fall short of what the United States had wanted.
"From our point of view, the issue is over. The issuance of a new resolution won't have any impact on the behaviour of the Iranian nation," the official IRNA news agency quoted Ahmadinejad as saying.
After months of diplomatic bickering and US pressure, Washington and its European allies overcame strong Chinese and Russian resistance to agree a third UN sanctions resolution on Tuesday, and they all approved a draft that expands and strengthens the penalties that were in the two earlier ones.
But Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Wednesday that the new draft UN resolution on Iran does not call for any harsh sanctions but encourages other countries to be vigilant.
