Jail terms for aid workers
28/01/2008 14:54 - (SA)
Paris - A Paris court on Monday sentenced six French aid workers - convicted in Chad of kidnapping 103 African children - to eight years in prison, French radio reported.
The sentence is simply the translation into French law of the sentence of eight years of hard labour handed down on December 26 by a court in Chad, which also fined them six million euros.
An agreement between France and its former colony allowed them to return home to serve their sentences.
The six were arrested in October trying to illegally fly out of Chad 103 children they claimed were orphans from Sudan's war-torn Darfur region, to be resettled in France. However, an investigation revealed that most of the children were actually from Chad and still had family there.
France is conducting a separate investigation into the affair with a view to holding its own trial against the aid workers. - Sapa-dpa
