Student tries to ski home
30/01/2008 11:51 - (SA)
Beijing - As unusually cold weather blankets much of central and southern China in snow and closes roads, one student had a bright idea about how to get home for the Lunar New Year holiday - he would ski.
The university student from Jingzhou in the central province of Hubei wanted to get back to his home city of Wuhan, 200km to the east, the Changjiang Daily said.
"Who knew that the highways would have been closed by snow
and that there would be no buses?" it said.
"So he had a fantastic idea. He hired or borrowed some ski
poles, skis and the rest of the equipment, bought some snow
gear, packed some water and snacks and got on the highway,"
said the report, carried on website www.sina.com.cn.
But he was spotted by police, who picked him up and took
him to a bus station, the newspaper added, without providing
details.
It did not say if the student finally got home, since many
roads and railways in the province have been cut off and
thousands delayed or stranded.
