Shalit 'alive and well'
01/02/2008 08:47 - (SA)
Rome - Exiled Hamas chief Khaled Meshaal has revealed that Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, captured by Palestinian militants in June 2006, is "alive and well", Italian weekly Panorama said on Thursday.
"Gilad Shalit is alive. He is well and he is even being treated with kid gloves," the Damascus-based leader told the magazine in an interview due to be published on Friday.
"But why so much anguish over one single life, when 12 000 of ours are prisoners in Israel, including ministers, women and children," Meshaal added rhetorically.
The young corporal, 19 and on national service when he was kidnapped on the edge of the Gaza Strip, has long been held up as a potential ace in negotiations over prisoner exchanges.
