Israelis kill 7 Hamas members
05/02/2008 18:10 - (SA)
Tel Aviv ? Israel killed at least seven Palestinians in an air strike and a gun battle in the southern Gaza Strip Tuesday, a day after two Gazans killed one Israeli in the first suicide bombing in the country in just over a year.
An Israeli military spokesperson confirmed the late afternoon air strike on a Hamas police station east of the town of Khan Younis. At least five people were killed and four wounded, paramedics said.
Earlier, two Hamas militants were killed in a clash with an Israeli ground force on a "routine" operation outside Rafah, on Gaza's border with Egypt, Hamas and the military said.
The airstrike and ground incursion however were in response to ongoing rocket attacks from Gaza, with two such rockets striking in and near two factories in an industrial zone of the southern Israeli town of Sderot.
Israel was on heightened alert Tuesday as a result of the bombing, which left a 73-year-old Israeli woman and the two attackers dead, and at least nine people injured.
