London - The body of a man believed to have been dead for a number of years was found propped up on the sofa of a flat where a council tenant continued to live, Avon and Somerset Police said on Friday.

Detectives could not say how long the man had been dead, but estimated it was several years.

The corpse was found in the living room by council workers on January 30 after complaints about a smell.

Believed to have been in his 70s, the dead man was lodged in a council flat in the Bedminster area of Bristol.

His landlord, a Bristol City Council tenant, who remained living in the property with the corpse, was arrested and released on bail. The death is not being treated as suspicious.

The landlord, also believed to be in his 70s, has not been named.

A report has been sent to the coroner's office and the city council is carrying out an internal review.

"We are shocked and concerned by this discovery and are carrying out an urgent internal review of the circumstances of the tenant," the council said.
