  • Tokyo - Japanese police arrested and later charged a US Marine on Monday over the alleged rape of a 14-year-old girl, a police officer said.

Tyrone Luther Hadnott, 38, of Camp Courtney Base was arrested early on Monday morning in southern Okinawa, a local police spokesperson said.

Hadnott is suspected of raping the girl inside a parked car late on Sunday, local media reported, quoting authorities.

Hadnott has denied the charges, according to local media reports.

The two met two hours earlier in Okinawa city and the man offered the young girl a ride home, the reports said.

Hadnott allegedly took her to his house and tried to kiss her, but when she started crying decided instead to drive her home in his car, Kyodo News said.

The girl telephoned her friends for help, Kyodo said.

"This is a serious crime that trespasses a woman's rights and should not be forgiven. I feel great wrath," said Okinawa governor Hirokazu Nakaima.
