Berlin - A 58-year-old man apparently starved himself to death in despair of his broken marriage and at losing his unemployment benefits, police in the central German town of Uslar said on Tuesday.
Two hunters found the half-mummified body of the man in a raised hunters' hide in the nearby Solling woodland on Friday.
The last entry in a diary the man kept dates to December 13, and police believe he died some two months ago.
According to entries in the diary, the man stopped taking food 24 days before the last entry, occasionally drinking a little water.
He documented the pain he was suffering and that he wanted to die.
Police investigations revealed a broken marriage and that the man had cycled the 130 kilometres to the wood from his home city of Hanover after he had lost his unemployment benefits in October.
There was no indication why he had chosen this way to end his life.
The hunters found his body when they went to the hide, which is not used in the winter months, to fix the ladder leading up to it.
Hunters use the hides to wait for deer and wild boar to come into their sights.
