Romney endorses McCain

  • Romney drops out of race
  • Boston - Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, who dropped out of the Republican presidential race last week, endorsed front-runner John McCain on Thursday despite their bitterly-fought race.

"I am honoured today to give my full support to Senator McCain's candidacy," Romney told a news conference with McCain at his side.

Romney also asked the 291 delegates pledged to vote for him to switch allegiance to McCain at the September Republican Party nominating convention.

McCain already has 825 delegates, according to independent pollster RealClearPolitics.com on Thursday. His long-shot rival Mike Huckabee is still in the race, but has only 240 delegates.

If Romney's 291 delegates switch to McCain, the 71-year-old Arizona senator would be just 75 away from the prized nomination to stand in the November 4 presidential elections against the eventual Democratic Party candidate - likely either Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama.

Romney described McCain, a former Vietnam prisoner of war, as a "true American hero" and the "next president of the United States".
