5 000 sign 'farce' petition
01/03/2008 19:02  - (SA)

  • Kasparov held by Russian cops
  • 'Putin is killing democracy'
  • 'Tsar, empresses' in poll bid
  • Putin critic banned from poll
  • Ex-dissident out of Russia race
  • Medvedev nervous about top job
  • Moscow - Former world chess champion Garry Kasparov delivered more than 5 000 signatures to Russia's Central Elections Commission on Saturday with a petition declaring the presidential election a "farce".

Riot police stood guard as Kasparov and prominent liberal leader Nikita Belykh delivered the signatures in support of a petition titled "I will not take part in this farce."

Kasparov, a fierce Kremlin critic, said Sunday's polls were rigged to ensure victory for President Vladimir Putin's protégé Dmitry Medvedev.

"They have already decided who will win the election. Everyone understands that the election is not legitimate," he said. "The result is already known.

"The world will have to decide whether or not they will give legitimacy to him when he wins the election."

Three riot police buses were deployed and metal barriers were used to close off the road to the Central Elections Commission.
