Israel to reduce Gaza activity
10/03/2008 09:08 - (SA)
Jerusalem - Israeli defence officials said on Monday that the army has been instructed to reduce activity in the Gaza Strip in light of a drop in rocket fire.
According to the order that came from the political echelon, the Israeli army will not conduct airstrikes or incursions into the Gaza Strip, the officials said on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive security nature of the subject.
Both Israeli and Hamas officials had in recent days said that if the other side stops attacking, their side will act accordingly.
A senior Israeli Defence Ministry official, Amos Gilad, returned on Sunday from talks in Cairo where he met with Egyptian security officials just days after they met with leaders of the Hamas rulers of the Gaza Strip. Egypt was trying to mediate a truce between the sides after violence escalated in recent weeks.
Since each side refuses to speak directly with the other, the understandings were not written down, the officials said.
