  • New York - The UN says insurgent and terrorist violence in Afghanistan increased sharply in 2007.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said there were over 8 000 conflict-related deaths and an average of 566 incidents per month in 2007. That compares with an average of 425 incidents per month in 2006.

Ban said in a report to the UN Security Council on Monday that while the insurgency draws strength from some Afghans, the support of foreign-based networks remains crucial.

The violence in Afghanistan is at its highest level since US forces invaded the country in 2001 to oust the hard-line Islamic Taliban rulers.

The Taliban harboured al-Qaeda leaders blamed for planning the US terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.
