Sex-ring governor given 48hrs

New York - Republicans in the New York state assembly said on Tuesday they would give embattled governor Eliot Spitzer 48 hours to quit or face impeachment proceedings over a prostitution scandal.
Republican minority leader of the state assembly, James Tedisco, told CNN that he would introduce the impeachment proceedings unless Spitzer stepped down within 24 to 48 hours.
Tedisco said: "We're preparing the resolution and the paperwork right now, but we'll give the governor some time...he may be making some decisions or (be involved in) some negotiations with the law enforcement officials.
"I think we have to give him at least some time to do that."
Tedisco was among those to have already called for Spitzer to resign after reports on Monday linked him to a high-end prostitution ring.
"We need somebody to stand up and lead us and Eliot Spitzer is incapable of doing that right now," Tedisco said.
He added that he had already been in talks with Spitzer's deputy, David Paterson, and told the lieutenant governor he would be happy to work with him if Spitzer succumbed to mounting pressure and resigned.
