Khar, Pakistan - The deaths of five civilians during a clash between government troops and militants have sparked a demonstration of more than 2 000 villagers in northwest Pakistan.

Supporters of Pakistan's largest Islamic group Jamaat-e-Islami rallied on Thursday in the tribal town of Khar.

Protesters were chanting "Death to America!" and "Anyone who is a friend of Musharraf is a traitor!" - referring to US-allied President Pervez Musharraf.

A party leader says Pakistani security forces opened fire on civilians "indiscriminately" on Tuesday while fighting militants in the area bordering Afghanistan.
