Middle East peace talks resume
14/03/2008 12:51 - (SA)
Jerusalem - Israel and the Palestinians were to resume peace talks on Friday, meeting a top US envoy, with Israel's defence minister opting to stay away amid mounting US criticism of settlement construction.
Ehud Barak's office said he was sending an aide to talks with Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad and US Lieutenant General William Fraser, who was appointed in January to oversee compliance with the 2003 international peace roadmap.
"The minister is sending his advisor Amos Gilad, who is fully mandated to represent him at this tripartite meeting," a ministry spokesperson said.
The US has criticised new Israeli settlement projects as "unhelpful" but insisted the shaky peace process must move forward.
