Brussels - More than 1 000 people gathered in Brussels on Sunday to protest against the US-led war in Iraq, police said, as the fifth anniversary of the outbreak of hostilities approaches.
The demonstrators, some with banners marked: "No war in Iraq" and "No war for oil", called for the withdrawal of US and British troops from Iraq, as well as a greater role there for the United Nations.
"We recall that the war in Iraq is illegal and we are marking our attachment to international law," one of the organisers, Arnaud Ghys, told Belga news agency.
Iraq on Thursday marks the fifth anniversary of the US-led war that toppled dictator Saddam Hussein with the nation still mired in deadly violence, its economy in tatters and people struggling without most basic services.
