Kerbala - A female suicide bomber killed 25 people and wounded 16 in a rare attack in the holy Shi'ite city of Kerbala in southern Iraq, police and health officials said on Monday.

The attack took place in a cafe in the centre of the city close to Shi'ite shrines, among the holiest sites in Shi'ite Islam, police said.

Provincial governor Aqeel Khazali confirmed that a woman had carried out the bombing, but had no further details.
