Mosul - A suicide bomber crashed an explosives-laden truck into an Iraqi army base in Mosul on Sunday, sparking a blast that killed five soldiers and wounded 25 people, an officer said.

"The bomber smashed the truck through barriers at the entrance to the base and triggered the explosion about 07:00." Major Mohammed Ahmed said.

Among the wounded were 20 Iraqi soldiers, he said.

Iraqi and US troops were engaged in a major offensive against al-Qaeda in Iraq's main northern city, which according to the United States military commanders was the last urban stronghold in Iraq of the jihadists.
