Earthquake shakes Iran
23/03/2008 19:10 - (SA)
Tehran, Iran - A moderate earthquake rattled a remote region in northwestern Iran, with no immediate reports of injuries, reported state radio on Sunday.
The quake with a magnitude of five on the Richter scale struck the Hasahtjin district, some 320km northwest of the capital around mid-afternoon, added the report.
Iran is located on several seismic fault lines and is prone to earthquakes, receiving an average of one small quake a day.
A medium-sized quake injured 20 schoolchildren in southwestern Iran in November.
In March 2006, three earthquakes and nine aftershocks hit western Iran in quick succession, killing at least 70 people and injuring about 1 200.
