Top Basra commanders removed
24/03/2008 21:33 - (SA)
Baghdad - Two government officials say Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has replaced the top police and top army commander in Iraq's second city of Basra because of concern over deteriorating security.
The two officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not supposed to release the information. Two weeks ago, thousands demonstrated near the Basra police headquarters with demands both security officers resign.
The changes were reported as al-Maliki flew to Basra on Monday to review the security situation.
Security in the city had been steadily declining well before the British handed over responsibility to the Iraqis on December 16.
