Baghdad - An Iraqi military spokesperson says 40 people have been killed and 200 wounded in two days of fighting between Shi'ite militias and government forces in Basra.
Colonel Karim al-Zaidi has given the figure to reporters on Wednesday but is not saying how many were militiamen, Iraqi soldiers or civilians caught up in the fighting.
Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has taken personal charge of the effort to rid the city of militias, some of whom have ties to nearby Iran.
Followers of Shi'ite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr have been fighting US and Iraqi forces in Baghdad and other cities in reaction to the Basra crackdown.
