US told to stop interfering

Beijing - China on Friday expressed strong indignation over a resolution on Tibet passed by the US House of Representatives, telling the US to stop interfering in Chinese affairs.
"This resolution recklessly distorts the history and reality of Tibet," foreign ministry spokesperson Jiang Yu said.
The resolution, proposed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and passed on Wednesday, asked China to end its crackdown on protests in Tibet and to enter directly into a dialogue with exiled Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama.
"It is long past time for Beijing to reassess its failed policy to attack and demonise the Dalai Lama and show the world it can have civilised discussions as a responsible world power," Pelosi said before the resolution was adopted by a vote of 413-1.
China strongly opposed the resolution, which "rudely interfered" in the country's internal affairs, and "seriously hurt the feelings of the Chinese people," Jiang said in a statement.
The US Senate also passed a resolution on Wednesday condemning China's crackdown on protests in Tibet.
The violence in Tibet on March 14 came after days of peaceful protests in Lhasa against 57 years of Chinese rule and quickly spilled over into other parts of China inhabited by Tibetans.
Exiled Tibetan leaders say 150 people have died. China insists it has acted with restraint and killed no one, blaming Tibetan "rioters" for the deaths of 20 people.
The unrest, the worst to hit the Himalayan region in decades, has come at an awkward time for Beijing as it prepares to host the Summer Olympics.
