Big development in Olmert probe
06/05/2008 13:44  - (SA)

  • Israeli police question PM
  • Olmert not charged over bank
  • Olmert bribery cases dropped
  • Police grill Prime Minister
  • Olmert deal probed
  • Jerusalem - Israeli local media were abuzz with speculation on Tuesday over the latest corruption probe against Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, reporting a "significant development" in the case.

Authorities have upheld a days-old media blackout on the latest investigation into corruption allegations against Olmert, the fifth such probe since he took office two years ago, although one case has since been dismissed.

But Israeli public and army radio, along with several newspapers, spoke of a major development in the case and said the justice ministry may lift the gag order.

Anti-fraud investigators questioned Olmert for an hour on Friday, but have prevented the prime minister from releasing any statements on the specifics of the case.

Olmert has denied any wrongdoing and insisted he will continue his duties as premier, but in a rare step he has cancelled all interviews with local media ahead of the country's 60th anniversary celebrations this week.
