  • Jerusalem - Israel celebrates its 60th anniversary on Thursday. Here are some main points in its history:

    • November 29, 1946: UN partitions Palestinian into Jewish, Palestinian states. Arabs reject plan.

    • May 14, 1948: Israel declares independence, setting off a two-year war with Arab nations that ends with new Jewish state and about 700 000 Palestinian refugees.

    • October 29, 1956 - Israel joins Britain, France in campaign against Egypt. Israel captures Sinai desert but is forced to withdraw by US and Soviet Union.

    • June 5, 1967: After Egypt blockades strategic straits and expels UN forces, Israel mounts pre-emptive strikes against Arab forces and captures Sinai desert, West Bank, Gaza Strip and Golan Heights.

    • September 5, 1972: Palestinian gunmen kill 11 Israeli athletes at Munich Olympics.

    • October 6, 1973: Egypt and Syria mount surprise attack on Yom Kippur. Israel defeats Arab forces but takes heavy losses.

    • November 19, 1977: Egyptian President Anwar Sadat visits Jerusalem, first by Arab head of state.

    • March 26, 1979: Egypt and Israel sign peace treaty. Israel returns Sinai desert to Egypt.

    • June 6, 1982: Israel invades Lebanon to push back forces of PLO leader Yasser Arafat.

    • December 9, 1987: Palestinians launch uprising against Israeli occupation.

    • September 13, 1993: Israel and PLO sign interim peace accord, leading to creation of Palestinian Authority under Arafat.

    • October 26, 1994: Israel and Jordan sign peace treaty.

    • November 4, 1995: Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin assassinated by ultranationalist Israeli opposed to concessions to Palestinians.

    • July 25, 2000: Israeli-Palestinian summit hosted by US President Bill Clinton ends without peace accord.

    • September 26, 2000: Second Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation erupts.

    • August 17, 2005: Israel unilaterally pulls out of Gaza, destroying 21 Jewish settlements there and four in West Bank.

    • November 26, 2007: Israel and Palestinians resume peace negotiations.
