Zagreb - The mummified corpse of a Croatian woman has been found in her Zagreb flat, where she is believed to have been dead for 35 years, police said on Wednesday.
The flat had been locked up since the 1970s, a police statement said.
She is believed to be Hedviga Golik as an identity card bearing the name of Golik, born in 1924 and who went missing in 1973, was found in the residence.
Police said three residents of the building forced their way into the flat to carry out measurements for planning purposes.
"When I entered, I noticed something on the bed of this tiny dark apartment. I ran out and we called the police," neighbour Sime Ungar told reporters.
Other neighbours recalled a "strange" woman who did not talk to anyone and who worked as a nurse in a clinic close to her home.
Golik moved into the 20-square metre attic apartment in 1961. It was given to her by the then janitor who was her "lover", according to another neighbour, Dragutin Kis.
Her immediate neighbour Katica Caric said the woman was a member of a "religious sect" and that she announced her intention to move to Macedonia with fellow members.
This was how the neighbours explained her four decade absence.
The corpse has been sent for an autopsy to confirm its identity and determine the exact time and cause of death, police said.
